A wearable support device for patients recovering from gender affirmation surgeries to protect and support a newly created neophallus during recovery.

Background

Gender affirmation surgeries, such as phalloplasty, can be performed for those with gender dysphoria. In a common method of phalloplasty surgery, tissue is taken from part of the body and a neophallus free-flap is created and attached at the patient groin via a circumferential suture. Recovery post-surgery typically includes strict bedrest followed by discharge without a supportive device other than using gauze pads and bandage wraps. In this recover period, the neophallus must be protected while allowing accessibility, must be supported at a specific angle, and must allow the patient to carefully move. In the days/weeks after surgery, there is risk of suture tear, insufficient blood flow, risk of infection, and even detachment of the neophallus. Patients experience heightened anxiety and fear during recovery. This affects their quality of life and requires additional help from caretakers. There is no support device on the market that is tailored to patients undergoing phalloplasty procedures, opening a need for such a device to help patients in transition and recovery.

Technology

The Neophallus Support Device is a wearable medical support that aids in healing after phalloplasty surgery. It has been designed by caregivers specializing in phalloplasty with the needs of patients and providers in mind. The device supports the neophallus at the optimal healing angle, avoids suture lines, allows for patient ambulation, maintains accessibility for provider assessment, and is customizable to patients’ size and needs. The neophallus support is made of medical-grade materials, repels fluids, is washable, and can be reused.
